A Gold Rush Weekend: Cycling!

13 Sep

Cyclebration 2010This past weekend, the city of Folsom, CA kicked off its 3rd annual Bike Festival popularly known as Cyclebration. With over a dozen events from a family friendly cruiser ride around Lake Natoma to Time Trials, riders of all levels and ages were able to enjoy the weekend’s festivities. The Gold Rush Metric Century held on Saturday was my nugget (points for pun!).

Gold Rush Century 2010The Gold Rush Century was Cyclebration’s main event for road cyclists and the ride took in some of the most beautiful and scenic roads in the low Sierras. Cyclists climbed Baxter’s Grade to a much appreciated water stop and turn around point for the Metric Cyclists (me!), while Full Century riders continued on and into Bear Valley. Check-in time was 6:00 am – 8:30 am with a start time of 7:00 am… keeping things casual, it wasn’t a mass start so you could begin the ride whenever you wanted as long as you finished the ride by the end of the day.

Of course, the ride was not without its quirks. Despite the fact that EVERY SINGLE TURN was marked with an A-frame and obnoxiously orange sign with an arrow pointing cyclists in the right direction, I managed to miss a turn (and a few subsequent turns) due to a conveniently parked construction truck. Luckily, I have some experience with rerouting and impromptu adventuring, only adding on a few extra miles with a little more climbing before getting back on track.

The ride finished at Folsom City Lions Park where live music hovered in the air over endorphin-high cyclists and their families and friends. Vendor’s tents were gold rushed with waves of people eyeing the swag, picking up branded water bottles, samples, and the like. Avoiding the crowds and not really trying, I managed to fill a bag with goodies before leaving the park and catering to my aching back. Good times!
